-
-
-
- IBM's AnyNet* products have recently won two awards.
- Data Communications magazine chose AnyNet/2 as a "Hot
- Product" in the January 1994 issue. Each year, Data
- Communications selects 30-40 "Hot Products" which are
- technically innovative and address specific needs in complex
- networks.
-
- The Data Communications "More Protocols? No Problem"
- article notes that AnyNet is the first product to meet the
- goals of the Networking Blueprint. One way AnyNet does
- this is by allowing network managers of multiple protocol
- networks to settle on a single backbone protocol, reducing
- maintenance and operational costs.
-
- AnyNet received it's first award in August at InterOp in San
- Francisco. The readers of Network World magazine chose

- TIME AND PLACE/2
- AT
- ALLIANZ LIFE INSURANCE
-
-
-
- Allianz Life installs Time and Place/2 and now couldn't
- operate without it.
-
- When Allianz Life Insurance went from a mainframe to
- LAN Server 3.0, one of its most critical needs was for an
- easy-to-use, efficient calendar with free-time search. The
- company installed IBM's Time and Place/2.
-
- "We couldn't operate without it," says Sherry Houle. "Every
- one of our people on the LAN use the system, from the
- president to the newest employee.
-
- "For us, it's a real production system." Houle is Assistant
- Vice President, Information Systems Office, at Allianz Life
- Insurance of North America.
-
- "When we went from the host to the LAN, " she says "we
- needed an automated calendar, and IBM provided us with
- Time and Place/2 early code. Their support has been very
- good. They have really listened to our suggestions and
- requirements. When they demonstrated the last release
- (Version 2.0) for us, it was great because our users saw that a
- lot of their suggestions and requirements were included."
-
- Allianz Life Insurance
-
- Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America,
- headquartered in Minneapolis, operates in all 50 states and
- Canada. It is one of the 50 largest insurance companies on the
- continent and is a member of the worldwide Allianz group of
- Munich, Germany, the world's sixth largest insurer.
-
- Allianz Life had been operating with IBM's Professional
- Office System (PROFS) on a mainframe. "PROFS was great,"
- says Houle, "but we had dumb terminals, and we wanted to
- exploit the power of the workstation. We made a decision to
- go to workstations on a LAN with OS/2 as our operating
- system."
-
- During 1992, Allianz installed OS/2 workstations and made
- decisions on software. "We viewed four things as critical,"
- says Houle, "e-mail, storage and retrieval, word processing and
- a group scheduling calendar with free time search." Allianz
- installed Lotus Notes for e-mail and groupware, AmiPro for
- word processing, and Time and Place/2 for scheduling.
-
- In 1993, Allianz was running all office applications on LAN
- Server, with more than 500 employees connected through
- workstations in Minneapolis and also in Dallas and New York.
- By the end of 1994, the company will have a total of 750
- employees on LAN Server.
-
-
-
- Calendaring
-
- "From our perspective," says Houle, "calendaring with freetime
- search was a critical application. After using Time and Place/2,
- we can't imagine how a company can operate without it."
-
- She explains, "You ask the system, give me a time over the
- next five days when these six people and a conference room
- are available for half an hour. I'll make the choice, and you
- stick it on their calendars, and I want to have it done and be
- out of there in less than 30 seconds."
-
- Time and Place/2 provides extensive facilities for calendaring
- and group scheduling, including monthly, weekly or daily
- views of the calendar, and to-do and memo pad windows. It
- provides free time search to scan calendars and schedule
- meetings; a notification function so everyone knows of new
- items or events on their calendars; and reminder alerts. It also
- supports the Vendor Independent Messaging (VIM) interface
- for sending event notices vie e-mail to non-calendar users on
- LANs and hosts.
-
- In installing Time and Place/2, says Houle, "what was
- especially great was that it has all the scheduling function of
- PROFS" as well as things like customization, icons and group
- to-do lists. Further, users have several options for viewing their
- schedules as well as an option to use the on-screen memo pad.
- "These were pluses for many of our users," she says.
-
- Allianz started training users on Lotus Notes and Time and
- Place/2 on the first of November 1992. "By the first week of
- January," says Houle, "we had all our users moved to the
- LAN."
-
- "Now," she says, "we have all the critical office function we
- had before, and we are just starting the climb to the system's
- overall potential."
-
- With Time and Place/2, users establish their own calendar
- security, and they allow department or team members, or any
- group of individuals, to use free time search to schedule
- meetings. At the same time, users can control viewing access
- to confidential events or to-do lists.
-
- At Allianz, users make their calendars as widely accessible as
- possible, and all Allianz users can schedule resources such as
- meeting rooms and equipment.
-
- From the system administrator's point of view, one of the
- system's most valuable functions is the ability to backup and
- archive data. Also, the system allows the company to establish
- standards by which events can be automatically archived, such
- as after 60 days.
-
- Everyone uses Time and Place/2," says Houle. "Executives, all
- managers, and employees from all disciplines. At Allianz, basic
- typing skills are a must. If you're not comfortable using a
- workstation, it's very difficult to communicate within our
- organization. E-mail and Time and Place/2 are essential.
-
-
- "We've just begun to realize some of the operating efficiencies
- we foresaw," she says, "and we're very excited about Version
- 2. It really employs the power of OS/2, and it includes even
- more easy-to-use enhancements like drag and drop.
-
- Also, she says, "I know from my personal experience in
- working with IBM that their support on calendar is very good,
- and the Time and Place/2 people have been excellent. They
- listened to us, and there is a lot of good stuff and functions we
- wanted in the release."

- IBM AT THE 1994
- WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES
-
-
-
-
- After seeing the IBM ads during the 1994 Winter Olympics,
- people asked what IBM systems were installed and the
- applications that they ran. The following will help answer
- some of your questions.
-
- The XVII Olympic Winter Games, February 12-27, 1994,
- took place in Lillehammer Norway. Conducting the games
- involved 11 sites, 55 events, 2000 athletes, 12000 employees
- and volunteers, 8000 media representatives, 50000 accredited
- personnel, 100000 visitors per day and nearly 2 billion
- television viewers.
-
- IBM was the Official Information Systems Partner to the
- XVII Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer 1994. As
- such, IBM delivered all computer equipment, systems
- software, etc. and more than 60 manyears of assistance.
- During the games, there were 50 Customer Engineers and 50
- Systems Engineers working integrated in the Olympic
- organization (LOOC).
-
- The heart of the Olympic Information System for the XVII
- Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer was the IBM
- ES/9000 high availability system. More precisely an IBM
- 9121 model 610, running MVS/ESA*. There were more
- than 3.500 PS/2*s in Token Ring LANs connected to the
- central ES/9000*-system mainly through more than 20 IBM
- 3745s. One IBM LAN Network Manager provided Token
- Ring management for the entire network. The PS/2s were
- running OS/2 and to a large extent CICS OS/2*. There was
- also a large AS/400* in the network, running the internal
- business systems for LOOC with gateways to the IBM
- IIN-network. Touch screen technology was largely utilized for
- the PS/2s.
-
- The first PS/2-based systems were installed in 1989, the
- AS/400 in 1990, and the first ES/9000-based systems has been
- in production since 1991.
-
- All the PS/2 systems are running OS/2, - a mix of 2.1 and 1.3.
- The communication between OS/2 systems is solved using
- low-level NetBIOS protocol and high-level CICS OS/2
- transactions across APPC. Between the mainframe and the
- OS/2 systems, CICS OS/2 and APPC is used. Between the
- OS/2 systems and OEM equipment, asynch communications is
- used, mostly programmed using the ACDI interface in CM/2.
-
- The networks are managed from a central control room using
- around 20 OS2 PS2s with IBM LAN Network Manager.
-
- The systems are built at a special 'factory' using a software
- generation facility based on IBM NetView* Distribution
- Manager/2 LDU.
-
-
-
-
- The Olympic Information System covers a broad variety of
- application systems necessary to run the Games, including:
-
- Result System, calculating and tabulating all results based on
- time and judges marks, interfacing a large variety of rather
- exotic equipment such as timing equipment, scoreboards,
- news agencies and live TV production systems.
- Commentator Information System, a highly specialized
- information system for TV and radio commentators,
- supporting their live broadcasts. The system was originally
- developed by IBM Spain for the Barcelona Games 1992,
- covering some summer sports. In Lillehammer, it was
- further developed to cover all winter sports.
- Info'94, an information system for the Games, available to
- all accredited personnel, 40-50,000 persons.
-
- Electronic Mail, available to all accredited personnel.
- The system is based on OfficeVision/MVS* which has
- proven not only to be extremely reliable and sturdy but
- also rich in functions and flexible to meet the particular
- needs of an event like the Olympic Games. Since the
- typical user is "the first time user", and since there is no
- possibility to educate the user on beforehand, the user
- interface is highly specialized to this situation. The
- system also features interface to a pager system, allowing
- messages up to 128 characters to be transmitted directly to
- pagers.
- Volunteer Management Managing the education, clothing,
- housing, feeding and use of some 10,000 volunteers to the
- Games.
- Accreditation
- The issuing of accreditation cards for all accredited
- personnel was a critical system as to avoid personnel
- standing in long queues.
- And a large variety of other applications to serve the
- administration in the planning and execution of the Games
- and the preceding test events that took place in the 1st and
- 4th quarters of 1993.

- 3. IBM LAN SERVER 3.0
-
-
-
- LAN SERVER 3.01 OPTIMIZES
- PENTIUM POWER, ENHANCES
- RELIABILITY
-
-
-
- IBM has ramped up OS/2 LAN Server performance and
- reliability by announcing LAN Server Version 3.01, an
- upgrade that exploits the power of Intel's PENTIUM**
- microprocessor and keeps users up and running even if the
- naming server fails.
-
- "The addition of PENTIUM optimization underscores IBM's
- commitment to continue enhancing LAN Server performance
- on the Intel** platform," said Art Olbert, Director of LAN
- Systems for IBM's Personal Software Product division.
- "Overall, the 3.01 upgrade protects user investments in OS/2
- LAN Server by providing more function at no expense to
- our customers, he said.
-
- LAN Server 3.01 can cache small I/O requests, improving
- cache efficiency and enhancing performance for applications
- such as LAN databases which use small block sizes.
-
- "We are pleased that IBM has recognized the importance of
- Intel's PENTIUM chip as a server platform and are excited
- to see OS/2 LAN Server take advantage of the power of this
- processor," said John McNulty, Director of Marketing
- Enterprise Programs, Intel Corp., Santa Clara.
-
- LAN Server 3.01 provides users with an extra measure of
- reliability by offering enhanced backup domain controller
- support. This enhancement eliminates the domain controller as
- a single point of failure in the LAN and enables DOS LAN
- Requestor clients to logon with only the backup domain
- controller active. Previously, DOS LAN Requestor clients
- could not log on if the primary domain controller was inactive.
- Additional reliability features include support for
- hot-swappable disks.
-
- The new version adds support for IBM PC DOS 6.1, MS
- DOS** 6.0, OS/2 for Windows, and OS/2 2.1 environments.
- In addition, LAN Server 3.01 includes all Service Packs.
-
- LAN Server 3.01 is available now. Suggested retail prices for
- CD-ROM versions are $745 for LAN Server 3.01 Entry
- and $2,245 for LAN Server 3.01 Advanced. Customers who
- already have LAN Server 3.0 installed can upgrade free of
- charge with a LAN Server Customer Service Disk (IP07040)
- available online from OS2BBS, CompuServe**, Internet,

-
- OS/2 AND LAN SERVER --
- A CLIENT/SERVER SYSTEM!
- by Rusty Atkinson
-
- OS/2 and LAN Server are a client/server system. In the C/S
- market today, developers need common platforms for
- developing applications, as well as good tools for
- development. With LAN Server, the client and the server
- are both running on OS/2, and they share a common set of
- Application Programming Interfaces (API).
-
- The current trend in the industry is toward a client/server
- system that distributes applications and services onto multiple
- platforms. IBM is dedicated to the open industry standard
- OSF** DCE** model for distributed computing.
-
- Why Buy LAN Server 3.0?
-
- 1. You need good performance -- LAN Server has been
- shown to outperform other leading Network Operating
- Systems (NOS) in independent studies (LANQUEST
- report, 10/93)
-
- 2. A common platform for client and server applications is
- needed. Client and server can both run on OS/2 providing
- a common platform to create and execute client/server
- applications (only one set of APIs used). This platform
- makes it much easier to write applications.
-
- 3. Ease of use in a multiple server environment is required.
- "Single System Image" provides location independent
- resource global naming (aliases). This allows users to log
- on to multiple servers simultaneously with one userid and
- provides easier administration for administrators
-
- 4. Strong system and network management is required
- including access, problem, change, configuration,
- operation, and performance management. IBM's systems
- and network management products range from the
- entry-level, full function LAN Management Utility (LMU),
- to the industrial strength LAN NetView.
-
- 5. A non-dedicated server is beneficial. OS/2 LAN Server
- does not need a dedicated server because of the
- multitasking and memory protection of OS/2. This can
- mean decreased hardware costs and easier administration.
-
- 6. Low cost is a top priority. LAN Server 3.0 competitive
- Client-Based pricing encourages additional servers while
- allowing customers to grow clients with minimal cost
- ($75).
-
- 7. Multimedia services are required. IBM LAN Server
- Ultimedia* is the only product that will regulate
- multimedia and LAN bandwidth and set priorities for
- multimedia and LAN traffic, ensuring proper delivery of
- multimedia services on the network.
-
- 8. Interoperability and open systems are required. The IBM
- plan includes distributed systems LAN Server evolution to
- the open industry standard OSF DCE environment with a
- DCE API shared by OS/2, OS/400*, VM, MVS, AIX*,
- DEC**, HP**, Sun** and others.
-
-
-
-
- 9. Host communications and database functions are required.
- OS/2 LAN Server has been extensively tested with
- Communications Manager/2 and Database Manager/2 for
- OS/2. These products co-exist very well together in an
- enterprise client/server system, providing customers with
- a great variety of communications options and database
- function.
-
- 10. Customers who have made an investment in OS/2
- applications, who need a NOS - - LAN Server is the
- logical server platform.
-
- 11. The following features are required and are included in
- LAN Server.
- - Preemptive multitasking and memory protection
- - File replication service, providing fault tolerance
- - Automatic creation of network application menus for
- clients
- - PM graphical installation and graphical User Profile
- Mgt
- - PM hypertext online command reference and manuals
- - No additional server to add clients ($75 per client),
- which translates into less incremental cost for
- growth
- - 1016 user-limit; 254 users on each up to 4 adapters
-
- Client-Based Pricing
-
- Because of LAN Server's Client-based pricing, the cost of
- ownership in a client-server environment is much less than
- other NOS's. Some of the other NOS's have a tier-based,
- server-centric pricing scheme that has growth penalties and
- discourages adding additional servers.
-
- OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 ENTRY $ 795
- OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 ADVANCED $ 2295
- Clients
- DOS-OS/2 $ 75
-
- Key Strategies
-
- - LAN Server -- more than just a NOS, it is a Client/Server
- System
- - LAN Server performs very well against other NOS
- - LAN Server's client-based pricing allows users to grow
- without being penalized. It also encourages the use of
- additional servers to balance the workload.
- - LAN Server as a development platform is very robust
- because of the common set of APIs on server and client.
- - IBM's commitment to the OSF DCE environment will
- allow you to take advantage of open industry standard
- client/server computing.
-
- No other single vendor provides such a comprehensive line of
- products and overall networking strategy as IBM resulting in
- reduced support costs and fewer compatibility problems.

- HOW TO MIGRATE FROM
- LAN MANAGER TO
- LAN SERVER 3.0
- by Pete Greulich
-
-
-
- If you would like to know how easy it is to move from
- LAN Manager** to LAN Server and take immediate
- advantage of all the enhancements to OS/2 since IBM
- released OS/2 1.3, call the number listed below for your
- area. Have your fax number ready.
-
- IBM LAN Server 3.0 is a 32 bit application sitting on top of
- OS/2 that provides resource management on a network.
- Because LAN Server is a Network Operating System sitting
- on OS/2, it can exploit the power of OS/2 with a 32 bit
- High Performance file system. LAN Manager, because it
- sits on top of OS/2 1.3 a 16 bit operating system, looses the
- advantages that a 32 bit operating system can provide.
- Meanwhile LAN Server 3.0 has improved with fault
- tolerance, memory addressability, performance and
- exploitation of all the capabilities a 32 bit operating system
- provides.
-
- Also, to see why you should move to LAN Server 3.0 32 bit
- instead of NT Advanced Server**, just request document
- number 2347. This performance report tested utilizing nine
- of the top ten applications in the industry today (Microsoft**
- applications also) performing real world tasks. The report
- shows how IBM OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 is a stable, hot
- performer beyond LAN Manager and NT Advanced Server.

- LAN Server LANS, or on OS/2 TCP/IP networks? Are you
- considering consolidation of LAN management activities?
- Are you interested in central administration and maintenance
- solutions for your enterprise LANs? Open the Door to OS/2
- networks with IBM Network Door/2.
-
-
- IBM Network Door/2 (NetDoor* for short)
- - Relieves LAN administrators of the Hurculean tasks of
- tracking software inventory, implementing electronic
- software distribution, etc., by keeping applications on file
- servers.
- - Makes applications easily available via a very flexible
- catalog. Provides a complete set of functions for
- replicating and synchronizing application servers on an
- enterprise LAN, for the definition of couplet domains for
- fault resilience and load balancing among servers.
- - Provides an "unlimited" number of applications to each
- end user as needed, by enabling the concurrent use of
- licensed applications installed on servers to run on client
- systems.
-
- Announced on September 28, 1993, Network Door/2 is a
- flexible OS/2* LAN-based computing environment that
- improves the productivity of the end user and support
- personnel. NetDoor offers a flexible family of functions for
- creating, operating, expanding, and using an integrated LAN
- environment.
-
- These functions include:

-
- RAPID RETURN ON INVESTMENT
-
- o A survey of NetDoor administrators showed that the
- productivity of people using NetDoor rose between five
- and twenty percent. Assuming just five percent and an
- average cost of $60,000 per year per employee, the value
- of the time regained by using NetDoor on a fifty client
- LAN is $150,000 per year.
-
-
-
-
- QUICK START-UP FOR NEW USERS
-
- o End-users do not need to understand details about the
- LAN environment to install, use, or maintain NetDoor.
-
- IMPROVED ADMINISTRATOR PRODUCTIVITY
-

- 5. DCE NEWS
- by Trudy Henke and Laura Adams
-
-
- PRODUCT UPDATE
-
- On February 1, 1994, IBM announced General Availability
- of the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) Client for
- Windows. This new runtime client, in conjunction with the
- already existing DCE clients for both OS/2 and AIX, means
- there is a DCE client from IBM for all of the most
- commonly used desktop environments.
-
- Highlights:
-
- IBM's Distributed Computing Environment Client for
- Windows is a runtime client for open distributed applications
- compliant with Open Software Foundation's** (OSF) DCE.
- This runtime client can be used in a production environment
- to interoperate with the IBM AIX DCE/6000 servers or with
- any other OSF DCE-Compliant offering. This client enables
- the execution of both the client and server portion of the DCE
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and provides DCE directory and
- security services as needed for true distributed computing.
- This Windows runtime client is offered in addition to the
- already available DCE Client for OS/2, expanding the open
- environment to include additional users of the PC-LAN.
-
- Application Development:
-
- Developing applications that utilize the DCE Runtime Client
- for Windows requires the use of an Interface Definition
- Language (IDL) compiler for Windows. Such a compiler is
- part of the IBM DCE Software Developer's Kit (SDK) for
- OS/2 and Windows (Part number 96F8690). A software
- development environment including header files and DLLs for
- both Windows and OS/2 is included in the SDK.
-
- A sample DCE Client/Server application for Windows has
- been provided with the DCE Client for Windows product.
- With this sample application you can install, configure, and
- test your runtime environment without the IDL compiler.

-
- Performance:
-
- Performance information is an important aid in configuring a
- well-running DCE environment, as well as in developing
- efficient DCE applications. Following are summaries of three
- papers that provide the results of various performance tests for
- DCE. See ordering information below on how to obtain the
- papers.
-
- "Performance Characteristics of Key Functions Using IBM
- DCE for OS/2"
-
- This article provides insights into the performance of
- various core components of IBM DCE for OS/2. In
- particular, results from various benchmarks and "what if"
- scenarios are provided for Remote Procedure Call (RPC),
- Cell Directory Services (CDS), Security Services, DCE
- Threads, and Distributed Time Services (DTS). Some
- basic tips and helpful hints for performance improvements
- are also provided.
-
-
-
- "Multi-User Application Performance Characteristics of IBM
- DCE for OS/2"
-
- The goal of this report is to discuss some of the
- performance characteristics of DCE for OS/2, as observed
- in the IBM Austin multiuser, homogeneous Workgroup
- Environment Lab. Results are reported at the application
- level. The three benchmark applications used to measure
- DCE performance were: - RPC Data Transfer
- Benchmark, which demonstrates DCE performance in a
- CPU intensive environment.
- - Point of Sale Benchmark, which is based on the idea
- of a retail showroom (or parts store) where
- terminals, placed throughout the store, are used to
- place orders by or for the customer. All terminals
- access a common repository of ordering information.
- - Database Manager OLTP (OnLine Transaction
- Processing) Benchmark. This benchmark (originally
- developed to test OS/2 Database Manager), is used
- to compare DCE RPC with the native Database
- Manager Application Remote Interface (DARI).
- DCE RPC and DBM DARI provide equivalent
- packaging and transport services to support the
- scope of a transaction in a single call to a server.
-
- "Distributed Performance Characteristics of IBM DCE for
- OS/2"
-
- This report studies the effects of running DCE on both the
- OS/2 and AIX platforms, as well as distributing various
- portions of the DCE application and DCE services across
- multiple servers. Entry level IBM* PS/2* and IBM RISC
- System/6000* servers were used to:
- - establish a set of minimum performance
- expectations, and - identify some bottlenecks which
- may not be evident with the higher horsepower
- available for these platforms.
-
- Five server topologies were studied, ranging from a
- single-server environment, to multiple application and
- DCE servers. The Point of Sale Benchmark (mentioned
- above) was used to drive the environment.

- 7. IBM LAN DISTANCE
- BETA
-
-
- IBM is initiating the fourth drop of the beta program for
- IBM LAN Distance. Orders for this program will be
- accepted and filled starting immediately.
-
- The IBM LAN Distance program function extends the
- resources on a LAN to a remote workstation by allowing
- LAN applications to run unmodified over leased or switched
- phone lines. This allows transparent access to LAN
- resources and applications as if the remote workstation was
- physically connected to the LAN.
-
- The IBM LAN Distance beta program consists of two major
- components.
-
- 1. The LAN Distance Remote component provides the
- capability for a remote workstation to dial-in to the LAN
- and access LAN resources. The OS/ 2 LAN Distance
- Remote component allows two or more remote
- workstations to connect to each other and create a virtual
- LAN for resource sharing over the wide area network and
- requires OS/2 2.0 or higher. The Windows version of the
- LAN Distance Remote component provides similar remote
- workstation capability with one connection per workstation
- and requires Microsoft Windows 3.1.
-
- 2. The LAN Distance Connection Server component enables
- remote workstations to dial-in to the LAN and access
- LAN resources. Also available is the ability of LAN
- connected workstations to initiate a request for a
- Connection Server to dial-out to either another LAN
- Distance Connection Server or a LAN Distance Remote
- workstation for casual bridging of two networks. The
- LAN Distance Connection Server component also enforces
- security on/off the LAN and acts like a LAN bridge,
- filtering all but the appropriate LAN traffic for the remote
- workstation. The LAN Distance Connection Server
- component requires OS/2 2.0 or higher.
-
- Electronic support forums for this beta, which will be
- monitored by IBM's development laboratory in Austin, Texas,
- have been opened. These forums are provided so beta
- participants can obtain answers to technical questions about the
- beta program before or after placing an order for the beta code.
-
- This beta program is being made available to evaluate the IBM
- LAN Distance program function and provide development
- feedback. The code in this beta program should NOT be used
- in production.
-
-
-

- PRODUCT CERTIFICATION
- FOR THE REAL WORLD OF
- LAN SYSTEMS
- by Joyce Batty
-
-
-
- The challenge of today's business environment is having
- confidence that products work together in a compatible
- fashion. People no longer work in a simple world: they use
- applications from a variety of vendors on a variety of
- hardware to accomplish the daily tasks of running their
- business.
-
- Certified products gain greater visibility in the marketplace
- and are viewed with greater credibility by the decision
- maker.
-
- The "Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems" program
- certifies products (software and hardware) for coexistence,
- interoperability, and compatibility in complex multi-vendor
- LAN environments. Independent Software Vendors and
- Independent Hardware Vendors can submit their products to
- the Integration Test Lab in Austin Texas for testing. This
- program is complimentary to the "Ready! for LAN Server"
- product certification program, which is a self-test program
- for compatibility with IBM LAN Server.
-
- Customers can call 1-800-992-4777 or fax requests to
- 1-512-838-8989 for additional information.

- ON THE
- INFORMATION HIGHWAY
- (INTERNET)
- by Mary Hill
-
-
- Everyone is talking about the information highway, but how
- do you sort through the massive amount of data available on
- Internet? The answer is Gopher.
-
- Gopher is a distributed document search and retrieval tool
- and one of the primary means used to organize and look at
- information on Internet.
-
- Files are organized in menus and placed on Gopher servers,
- so Gopher clients can access them through a user-friendly
- interface. Menu items on the server can point to other
- menus on the same gopher server, or to menus on different
- gopher servers, allowing users to move from one server to
- another transparently.
-
- IBM now has an Internet gopher server dedicated to IBM
- Client/Server (C/S) information. Items in the C/S gopher
- include IBM newsletters (such as this newsletter), C/S
- product information, case studies (success stories), etc.
-
- How to access the IBM Client/Server gopher:
-
- 1. With a gopher client, the external name is
- csgopher.gpl.ibm.com (IP address 198.5.4.1). This
- newsletter can be found in the "Newsletters" menu.
-
- 2. Anonymous FTP to csgopher.gpl.ibm.com in the NEWS
- directory. The userid is 'anonymous' and no password is
- required.
-
- 3. IBM VNET users: a copy of the external gopher is
- available on the internal IBM network.
-
- On VM: preview the gopher by being linked to the
- gopher package. If the gopher package is needed, enter:
- TOOLS SENDTO RALVM17 VMTOOLS VMTOOLS
- GET GOPHER PACKAGE Then from the ready prompt,
- enter 'GOPHER CSGOPHER.ENDICOTT.IBM.COM'.
-
- On an OS/2 workstation with TCP/IP installed: preview
- the gopher by getting the OS/2 Gopher client code from
- OS2TOOLS: TOOLS SENDTO KGNVMCB PCTOOLS
- OS2TOOLS GET GOPHER PACKAGE Then from the
- gopher pulldown, click on menu details and enter the host
- name: 'GOPHER CSGOPHER.ENDICOTT.IBM.COM'.
